Facilitate Self-directed Learning with Use of eLearning Platforms in Classroom to Enhance Reading and Writing Skills

Innovation Classroom

Overview

The purpose of this open lesson is to evaluate practical lesson examples of flipped English reading and writing lessons incorporating various e-platforms. To illustrate the production of pre-, while- and post- stages of writing lessons, presenters will showcase the use of various e-learning platforms, including Nearpod, Kami and Padlet, in promoting self-directed and interactive learning.

When providing inputs for students, Kami is a handy tool for scaffolding students to read particularly dense or complicated passages or texts. It especially helps them to engage with the reading materials with its dictionary, annotation, comment and read-aloud functions.

To get instant reports and insights on students’ performance for adjusting our teaching strategies, teachers can use Nearpod for formative assessments. Multimodal elements can be integrated into the slides to scaffold students for their writing tasks. It also allows students to exchange ideas with their peers.

Prior to the writing task, students can share and comment on others’ ideas on Padlet. Teachers can also provide immediate feedback and instructions for students to polish their writings.

This open lesson aims to provide teachers with practical lesson examples of utilising e-learning platforms to facilitate self-directed learning. The speakers are going to showcase how students use Kami to aid their reading comprehension by note-taking and managing the knowledge they have acquired. They will also present examples of interactive Nearpod lessons. Students’ work using Padlet for exchanging ideas will also be illustrated.
