'Playful Chinese': Designing Games to 'Enter' the Text of Primary Chinese Learning

21st Century Classroom

Overview

Seven role-playing games (RPG) were created for Chinese learning, devised from the text of primary school Chinese textbook. It is a way for students to turn studying into fun.

Teachers can start the lesson with the game to lead into the content. For example, teachers or students may show the background of the story, such as the dialogue of characters, depending on the time and equipment used in a lesson.

Seven RPG games will be shown in this open lesson, for seven chapters of Primary 4 Chinese textbook.

The speaker will explain the ideas of the game design, from the text to the extension part of the game, showing how students ‘entering’ the text. Participants may input with a link or scan the QR code with notebooks, smartphones or tablets (Internet connection required) to enter the games and experience the learning process.
