Cross-curricular Learning: VR in IT, Visual Art and Chinese History Collaborative Teaching

21st Century Classroom

Overview

In 2017, the school allowed S3 students who studied the Chinese History Subject to join The Cultural Tours —「革命起源˙孫中山史蹟徑」organised by The Conservancy Association Centre for Heritage. Meanwhile, teacher of the Computer Subject was preparing to apply for OGCIO's Discipline Enrichment Program funding to hold VR courses and purchase relevant software and equipment. After discussion with other subjects, Chinese and Computer subjects joined together to create the VR Tour of Sun Yat-sen Historic Trail. Finally, the Chinese History Subject used this virtual guided tour to design the lesson for use in the classroom. The teacher in charge found that there are many artwork pieces replacing the original commemorative plaques through the Trail, and so enable students to understand the historical trails with the theme of ‘appreciating art, visiting ancient and modern’, and deepen their understanding of the history of Dr Sun Yat-sen in Hong Kong and the relationship between Dr Sun Yat-sen and Hong Kong. Since students could enjoy the effect of immersion without leaving home through this Virtual Tour, Ms Wong designed related visual art class lesson with this VR Tour. Through this activity, visual arts students not only can review Sun Yat-sen's life and reflect on this history, but also learn art expression skills. The Sun Yat-sen Historical Trail is divided into 16 stations, and each station has an artwork created by art created in Hong Kong to express every era and deeds related to Sun Yat-sen. Through the VR immersive experience, where students experience the scene and conduct learning and collaboration activities under the guidance of teachers, it also confirms that the Chinese proverb — ‘Traveling thousands of miles is better than reading thousands of books .’

In this open lesson, the speakers will share their experience in conducting the teaching plan, including the VR production process, teaching ideas and practical difficulties and solutions. They will also share the learning outcomes and experiences of students.
