Integrating Subject Learning and Values Education in a Tuen Ng Festival STEAM Project

21st Century Classroom

Overview

This teaching design focused on the culture of the Dragon Boat Festival. Collaborating across disciplines and using the inquiry-based learning approach, this design aims to deepen students' understanding of the cultural activities of the Dragon Boat Festival. The lesson first uses the form of storytelling to introduce the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival and bring out the traditional culture and meaning of dragon boat racing. In the STEAM part, students made their dragon boats and incorporated coding in their designs. Also combined with music rhythm and performance teaching, students imitated the situation of dragon boat racing. Students used Micro:bit programming to make a dragon boat stick simulator and they imitated the movements of the dragon boat drummers. Throughout the activity, students learned about Qu Yuan's life and appreciated his patriotic sentiments, values and the spirit of sacrifice, and thus, the origin of the Dragon Boat Festival.

Speakers of this open lesson will share their experiences in the integration of traditional culture and arts, STEAM education and values education in our curriculum design. The speakers would also like to showcase their design to participants for trial play, enabling them to personally experience the joy of dragon boat racing.
