Overview

During the COVID-19 pandemic, students often learn online at home, probably leading to a lack of communication and interaction with others. The dilemma may give rise to speech and language delays. Given this situation, this school has implemented the ‘Enhanced School-based Speech Therapy Service’ since 2020. It aims to make a breakthrough in the pull-out treatment that speech therapists used to conduct. By gradually working out the classroom-involving strategy, we hope to achieve the result that an ounce of prevention and enhancement is worth a pound of treatment.

The speech therapist at this school cooperates with the teachers to design various eLearning materials fitting the language strategies. The speech therapist uses them in Multiple Intelligences lessons through innovative and efficient large-class teaching. The speech therapist also brings the class to distinct areas on campus, providing them opportunities to practice the acquired language skills in different daily scenarios. Not only can large-class teaching allow the speech therapist to identify students with speech and language impairment early, but it can also enhance the language-thinking ability of all students. In addition, the subject teachers of this school take reference to those language strategies and integrate them into classroom teaching. It helps to boost students’ speaking skills and stimulate their interest in learning.
