Metaverse in Education: Applications, Challenges and Prospects

Overview

The Metaverse has gained more attention, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the post-pandemic era to meet a global need for collaboration and social interactions in various industries when maintaining a physical distance. Education is no exception.

In this seminar, the speakers will first introduce the current development of metaverse platforms and their applications in education, including the implementation of an interactive avatar toolkit in higher education developed by the Education University of Hong Kong. Secondly, the speakers will discuss the challenges posed by these applications in terms of ethical issues, equity, evolving technologies, and emerging pedagogies. Finally, future work will be explored regarding potential ways to address the challenges, and directions of metaverse development and use in education.
