The ‘Metaverse’ has been coined and considered as the nexus to connect with the future education and beyond. With the advanced technologies of extended reality (XR) such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), the concept of the Metaverse can be made possible to invent and define the future education. Educators and scholars believe that the Metaverse offers new and unprecedented experiential learning experiences for learners in schools, those that are not possible in our physical reality.

However, some may begin to question whether the Metaverse is age-appropriate and risk-free for students to learn and explore, even under the guidance of teachers and parents. What are the gaps and pitfalls that need to be minded when bringing the Metaverse to primary and secondary schools? How can the Metaverse be co-designed and co-developed with educators, teachers, and developers in industry to support learning of different subjects, like language and moral education, in primary schools?

In this presentation, the speaker will address these important questions through an ongoing project, ‘Enhancing literacy education with artificial reality neo-platform’ (eLEARN platform with VR), and discuss how the VR learning platform can offer direction to the future Metaverse for education.
