Students with Hearing Impairments@Libraries

SEN Theatre

Overview

Many persons who are either born deaf or deafened at an early age have difficulty in ‘Learning to Read’ because they do not grow up hearing the local spoken language. This creates a challenge for providing library services to students with hearing loss/impairments. The Guidelines for Library Services to Deaf People of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) aims to promote the effectiveness of library and information services to hearing-impaired groups internationally. The secret in deaf culture, library policies of related services and technology, collection development, space design, programmes, staff training, advocacy, and communication strategies with deaf and hard-of-hearing students will be disclosed in the presentation. The speaker will leverage the strength of school library capacities in catering to learning differences.
This seminar seeks to inspire participants to embrace ‘No One Left Behind’ in school education while supporting students with mild, moderate, severe, and profound hearing loss on ‘Reading to Learn’ in an equitable and inclusive library environment at both special and mainstream schools. Within the 30-minute seminar, the speaker will use PowerPoint slides to share the content with sign-language interpretation.
