Meta × Math: Exploring Mathematics Learning in Metaverse through Immersion in a Gamified 3D Space

Innovation Classroom

Overview

Recently, the buzzword ‘Metaverse’ has appeared in various media and universities have kick-started various Metaverse projects. It is true that the Metaverse will become the next wave of the Internet, and even the ‘next Internet’ , but how this new environment can be used for enhancing teaching and learning is still a topic to be discussed by the academic sector.

Ten years ago, when mobile tablets were firstly adopted in classroom, various e-learning pedagogies emerged: flipped learning, BYOD, blended learning, and we have learnt a lot from it. Can we apply these experiences and findings to the inquiry of metaverse pedagogy?

Since the application of the Metaverse requires the use of new software and equipment, such as VR headsets. It is important to find an appropriate learning entry point to make this investment worthwhile. For example, one of the basic technologies of the Metaverse is a three-dimensional (3D) Internet. Jumping from a tablet (two dimensional, or 2D) to a 3D computer is a big breakthrough. Therefore, for topics that have not been well taught and learnt in the 2D environment, wouldn’t there be breakthrough in the 3D Metaverse? An obvious example is the three-dimensional figures and topics in mathematics and science.

This open lesson will explore how the metaverse pedagogy can be effectively used and even extended to various subjects through practical teaching examples.
