Enhancing Students’ Writing Skills through Blended Cooperative Learning and Different EdTech

Innovation Classroom

Overview

Since 2020/21, teachers in this school have made use of the school-based educational platform (Microsoft Teams) to upload teaching and learning materials, deliver e-Homework and deliver online lessons. Last year, the teachers tried to apply blended cooperative learning in English teaching and learning. They found that students were motivated. They have applied some cooperative learning strategies and made use of different EdTech to enhance students’ writing skills.

Before writing, students should have a wide range of vocabulary. The teachers in this school have asked students to learn more new vocabulary through Quizlet. Sometimes, students play with Live Quizlet in lessons which can motivate the students and consolidate what they have learnt. To generate more ideas, teachers let students draw mind maps with Wh-question words online in groups. It can enrich the writing content.

In this open lesson, the speakers would like to share their experience of applying blended cooperative learning strategies to enhance students’ writing with other teachers and educators. The speakers will introduce the concepts of both blended learning and cooperative learning. Then, they will share the experiences of applying Blended Think-Pair-Share, Blended Pairs Check, Blended Round Table and Blended Number Head Together with practical examples and students’ work. They will also invite some students to present in person so that they can tell the guests how they learnt and felt. Guests will sit in pairs. They can make sentences with the taught key language structures through Blended Think-Pair-Share in Microsoft Teams. Other guests read the sentences, give feedback to and learn from one another. Moreover, they will do a proof-reading activity through Blended Pairs Check on Whiteboard. They will explain the common mistakes with each other in pairs. If time is allowed, they can experience of both Quizlet and Live Quizlet which can let students learn the new vocabulary in a self-directed way.
